from around the Maltese Islands
Comino is the third largest island in the Maltese archipelago. Its name comes from cumin, which was once grown there in large quantities. Nowadays, especially in spring, you can feel the intense scent of wild herbs. Comino, according to data from 2020, is only inhabited by a family of three. In the past, the island was occupied by pirates who made Comino a base for attacks on Malta and Gozo. In the times of the Knights Hospitaller, the St. Mary's Tower was built on Comino, and a century later St. Mary's Battery. During the First World War, the British built isolation hospital in Comino, the buildings of which are still there today.
In high season, this charming island is visited by up to 5,000 tourists. The fact is, however, that they do not do it for its historic buildings, but for the perfect vacation relaxation.
Comino is famous for its natural attractions, which create an ideal atmosphere for relaxing in the sun. What can be salutary in the heat of the Maltese summer? Invigorating, azure water of the Mediterranean Sea. The waters around Comino boast slightly cooler water thanks to stronger currents.
The most beautiful and famous place for a picturesque holiday is the Blue Lagoon bay, located between Comino and the smaller Cominotto. The Blue Lagoon is famous for its crystal clear and fairy-tale fauna and flora - every year it attracts a lot of diving and snorkeling fans. It is said that the bay is one of the most photogenic places in Malta - thousands of visitors cannot resist photographing the fabulous landscapes.
Another unique place near Comino is the Crystal Lagoon. In summer, it is swarming with excursion yachts and ferries. The Crystal Lagoon is very close to the Blue Lagoon there is no beach here, so tourists jump and dive from the boat into the tempting water. There are also short cruises to the Caves of Comino. Without a doubt, it is a perfect place for snorkeling. Adequately to the name, the water shimmers here with noble shades, especially emerald.
The phrase "Blue Lagoon" warms the senses of people who love sunbathing. The vision of swimming in a place where crystal clear water sparkles with many shades of blue, and then relaxing on a beach with fine, light sand is a dream of many people. You'll find all of this in the Maltese Blue Lagoon and its surroundings.
Just 800 meters from the Blue Lagoon, those seeking relaxation will find beautiful, natural and sandy beaches.
The first is St. Nicholas Bay - a charming place with crystal clear waters, made for diving. St. Nicolas Bay consists of two small sandy beaches that may be reserved for the Comino Hotel guests in summer, but are worth visiting for their family-friendly waters. St. Nicholas Bay is a popular beach offering many water sports, but definitely less crowded than the Blue Lagoon.
The second beach is the Santa Maria Bay, characterized by shallow, crystal clear waters. It is located right next to the charming little police station in Comino that controls the boats around the island. The bay is only a 20-minute walk from the Blue Lagoon and is mostly used by locals in boats or by guests of the Comino Hotel.
